A manager in Love International Hotel, Egan was arrested last week along with 3 robbery suspects for using the hotel as a hideout for criminal activities. The manager was said to allow the suspects and other suspected criminals to stay in the hotel registering them as guests with fake identification and addresses, so that they will not be traced by the police. Checks in the hotel record book revealed that there was no trace of their real names in the guests’ register.The Police allegedly discovered that the suspects have been living there for some time before they were eventually arrested.

The Lagos Airport Hotel Sports Association officially kicked off  its sports week, last week with an 8km race from the hotel to Alausa Secretariat followed with games such as football, table tennis, snooker, sack race, ayo olopon, catching the train, athletics and swimming. The matches are between different departments in the hotel and the Sports week ends with a grand finale on the 25th of January. It is all about friendship, mental and physical well-being says the Managing Director of the Hotel, Mr James Adenigba as he urged participants to always ensure fairplay and avoid serious injuries.

According to Punch Newspaper, a report from National Bureau of Statistics reveals that the hotel and restaurant industry lost N2.18bn during the industrial strike action. Also, a hotelier told Tribune Newspaper that there was an average drop of about 70% in bookings..A lot of business meetings and events were postponed and reservations cancelled as the roads were unsafe for both guests and staff and various strategies were implemented in many hotels to minimize operating costs. Business is slowly picking up for hotels and hoteliers hope to catch up from the month of February.

La Mirage Hotels Calabar- owned by the Minister for Tourism, Chief Edem Duke was sealed by Federal Inland Revenue Service last wednesday over tax issues but was opened an hour later after the officials collected a cheque of one million naira. They promised to return for the balance of the payment which amounts to millions of naira from both income tax for three years and value added tax for two years

The Federal Inland Revenue Service arrested 8 hotel managers last week in some parts of Abuja following repeated written request to remit their tax. Though some of the hotels have been registered as far back as 2003, there is no evidence that they were registered as  tax payers nor have remitted their VAT

The Sunborn Yacht Hotel in Lagos, multi-billion naira floating hotel which arrived Lagos over two years ago remains floating on the Marina waterfront has not been used since the yacht was purchased from the UK. The supposed tourist destination is said to be an object of mockery now as the yacht looks deserted with the paint is fading and windows are broken. The Sunborn Yacht Hotel was a major tourist attraction in London with a starting price of £300 – approximately N75, 000 for a night for a single room. The regulatory body of Nigerian tourism-Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, in collaboration with EFCC have asked hoteliers to register with NTDC as this will provide credible, reliable and accurate information on some important issues,  Hotels are now used as hide-outs for criminals, money launderers and fraudsters and without registration, it is difficult for EFCC to locate these hotels.It is important for NTDC to have an accurate database of hotels as Nigeria is part of a global village and people around the globe need information to do business with us
